Jean de Dieu Niyonzima, a student at the Education Institute for Blind Children in Kibeho, was awarded for being among the top five students with the best scores in the ordinary level national exams.
Yesterday, on August 27, 2024, the results for those who took the national exams in primary schools and the first cycle of secondary education were announced.
Jean de Dieu Niyonzima, 18 years old, started studying at the school for the blind in Kibeho when he was six years old, beginning in kindergarten.
He studies at a school located in Nyaruguru District in the Southern Province, but he is originally from the Northern Province of Rwanda.
He says that to succeed, he set goals for himself and prepared well for the exam.
He said, ”I first created a study schedule for my subjects. For example, I decided that on Mondays I would study Mathematics and Physics, and during the weekends, I would do exercises and review a bit more.”
The administrator of the school for the blind in Kibeho said they are proud that a student from their school is among the top five.
He said, ”Perhaps we didn’t expect him to be fifth in the whole of Rwanda, but we knew he was talented.”
Niyonzima has a 60% visual impairment. He can only see things up to two meters away, but not beyond that, as explained by Sr. Nicolas, who also uses Braille in his studies.
He mentioned that the subjects he excelled in the most are Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry, and he attributes his success to the dedication he puts into studying.
