In Conakry, the political situation is uncertain. The head of the junta in power in Guinea announced Monday by decree the dissolution of the government in office since July 2022, according to a video posted on the presidency’s Facebook page.
“The government is dissolved” and “the management of current affairs will be ensured by the directors of cabinet, the secretaries general and the deputy secretaries general until the establishment of a new government,” declared a spokesperson for the junta, General Amara Camara, in front of around twenty uniformed soldiers, some of whom are masked and displaying weapons. He gave no reason for the dissolution of the government, nor gave a date for announcing a new one.
Limited Internet access
The junta, headed by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, who took power at the end of September 2021, agreed under international pressure to return the place to elected civilians by the end of 2024.
But above all, the regime arrested a certain number of opposition leaders and launched proceedings against others. It has banned all demonstrations since 2022.
Guinea has also experienced severe limitations on Internet access for several weeks. The junta has also cracked down on a number of media outlets. The opposition denounces the authoritarian and exclusive conduct of the country.
H.E Lt General Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea visited Kigali on January 25 on a three-day official visit, hosted by Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The purpose of the visit was to enhance friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
