MUHANGA: Meat vendors protest following an arrest of 5 of them

Fraud in meat business has been increasing with time, as the regulations around meat business get more and more tightened in RWANDA.

Meat vendors in Misizi slaughter house, Shyogwe sector, Muhanga district all took away their cows from the slaughter house.

Rukimbira Claver, an investor operating the slaughter house, yesterday said that 40 cows were taken by their owners, saying they are going to do a follow up on the arrest of their fellows.

Etienne Gasigazi, a meat vendor at the same slaughter house said vendors can’t overlook the loss of 8 million the arrested ones are facing, as the truck which was carrying meat is parked at a police station with it’s content where 900 kilograms of meat were caught in this alleged fraud.

Arrested are NSHIMIYIMANA Augustin 34, DUKUZUMUREMYI Gervais 44, HAKORIMANA Patrice 45, MUKAMANA Betty 52, and KUBWIMANA Patricia 37 (a veterinary doctor in Shyogwe sector, Muhanga district).

5 people were arrested in relation to fraud in meat business

Dr Murangira Thierry, RIB’s spokesperson said these people were arrested on grounds of mistreating domestic animals, killing them and documents forgery.

“Crimes were committed in different times, where they stole cows, slaughtered them, and deliver meat to Kigali with the aid of an official at the slaughter house and the veterinary who could provide them with papers stating that meat was bought in an authentic way.”

SP HABIYAREMYE Emmanuel, Police spokesperson in Southern Province, told IGIHE that starting this January 28 cows had been reported stolen, and the meat truck was reported to go around in villages collecting illegally slaughtered meat, intended to deliver in Kigali.

Last year, the business regulators ordered meat vendor to freeze the meat at least 24 hours before selling them, which in some parts has met barriers where you could find some people selling freshly slaughtered meat, which contradicts the regulations in Rwanda.
