The two night-watchers involved in the arrest of the DR Congo armed soldiers who crossed into Rwanda have been awarded for their bravery.
The incident happened on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, when three DR Congo armed soldiers crossed into Rubavu District.
The statement by Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) said that two of them “were arrested by RDF patrols supported by local neighbourhood watch (Irondo).”
The night-watchers who were on duty are Patricia Uwamariya, 34, and Rtd Sergeant Gasake Mutsinzi, 48, from Murambi village, Buhaza Cell in Rubavu.
After each receiving certificates of appreciation and an envelope with money, they smiled and expressed their dedication to continue working closely with other security personnel and local authorities to maintain safety.
“They did not reach their intention as we called for help, and immediately support showed up. This is what we appreciate most, we’re delighted to be recognised and we’re going to double our work, “said Uwamariya.
“Residents near the border should remain vigilant and when they find someone strange, report them immediately,” she added.
Speaking to The New Times on Heroes Day celebrated at the Umuganda Stadium on Thursday, February 2024, Prosper Mulindwa, Mayor of Rubavu District, commended their extraordinary contribution towards fighting and reporting timely, saying that their work is an act of heroism.
“They are ordinary residents who immediately shared information directly by the time the enemy crossed into Rwanda. They even fought against the enemy until they were arrested [soldiers]; you heard that no one escaped from us,” he said.
“They’re night-watchers, a man and woman, who showed heroic acts that are possible for everyone regardless of being a male or a female, a civilian or a soldier. They’re good examples of the possibilities of our country. Their contribution is bravery. It’s an act leading to heroism, because if they feared, were selfish, and run away, the enemy [soldiers] could have been free and reached far, but they were fearless. They decided on their own to fight them, and that is what we recommend every Rubavu resident and Rwandans at large to do—knowing that unity is strength.”
DR Congo army has, on different occasions, crossed the border between the two countries amid cold bilateral relations.
